New Rotterdam Central
Rotterdam is to get an attractive, dynamic and well-functioning public transport terminal. The new Rotterdam Central will be a transport interchange of regional and international significance.
New Rotterdam Central: why exactly?
Rotterdam Central is an important transport interchange. With 110,000 passengers a day, the station area processes as many people as Schiphol Airport. As well as the connection to the European network of high-speed trains (HSL-South), Rotterdam Central will have links to the light rail system RandstadRail. With the advent of the HSL-South and RandstadRail, the number of travellers at Rotterdam Central is expected to have increased in 2025 to around 323,000 a day.
Thanks to its good accessibility and proximity to the city centre, the station area is already an excellent location for businesses, offices and various urban functions. In this sense, the arrival of the HSL and RandstadRail provide Rotterdam with even more unique opportunities. In order to make full use of these, the whole station area needs to undergo a metamorphosis.
Central District Rotterdam
The area immediately surrounding the new Rotterdam Central will be called Central District Rotterdam. In the future, the newly-developed area and its surroundings will merge seamlessly. To facilitate this, the plan for the key project Rotterdam Central covers not only a public transport terminal, but also urban development. The urban development plan provides the necessary insight into this.
From thoroughfare to pedestrian boulevard
The plans for the station area ambitious and reflect the quality of the new public transport terminal. In order to create space above ground, investments are being made in underground infrastructure. Thanks to these quality boosts, a wide pedestrian boulevard can be created between the station and the city centre. In the future, you will be able to walk from the centre of the city to the new Rotterdam Central Station through a spacious pedestrian area. Surrounded by trees, this will be a very pleasant pedestrian boulevard. Along this route, you will no longer encounter any obstacles, you will not need to cross any busy roads or watch out for passing buses and trams: you can find your way to the station unhindered.
